Shirley Fernandez Named Union Hill's Teacher Who Makes a Difference

There are those special teachers who reach out and make every possible connection they can to their students so their students have every chance of success. Union Hill School fifth grade teacher Shirley Fernandez is that teacher. Mrs. Fernandez cares for her students' academics, their emotional well being, and, in many cases, just meeting their basic needs. In her own words, “I treat all the kids the “same” by giving each child what they need. Some kids have other needs and I meet them where they are at. I am mindful to be respectful and model respect for my students.” Recognizing that some of her students have basic needs, like not enough food, Mrs. Fernandez has been known to provide lunch for her entire class, a crock pot of a delicious home cooked meal and her famous homemade cookies. As a leader who exudes a quiet confidence amongst the teaching staff Shirley is thoughtful about sharing ideas, coaching team discussions, and validating others. Shirley’s efforts as the advanced 5th grade math teacher, a member of the district social studies adoption team and the Union Hill bargaining team speak to her dedication to Union Hill School District. The faculty, students, and families of Union Hill School District are blessed to have Shirley Fernandez as a vital part of the Union Hill family. Thank you Shirley, all that you do makes an incredible difference for our students.
