Superintendent
Greetings Bearcat Family!
As the new Superintendent of Union Hill School District, I am both honored and humbled to join this incredible school community. Living in Nevada County since 2010, I’ve been an educator and education leader locally for the past 11 years with (now) three school districts. I started my (second) career as a teacher in the Bay Area – I am excited to bring my passion for education and commitment to student success to Union Hill.
Reflecting on the journey ahead, I am filled with enthusiasm for the 2024-2025 school year. We remain steadfast in our commitment to our Vision and Mission to provide an inclusive, high-quality education that prepares our students for lifelong learning and success. Our Strategic Goals focus on fostering academic excellence, promoting social-emotional well-being and a positive school culture, and engaging our community in meaningful ways. Together, we will continue to build on these foundations, ensuring every Bearcat thrives.
Union Hill is fortunate to have a dedicated and talented team of staff members and rock-solid faculty. We have familiar faces and new additions – I am thrilled to welcome several new members to our Bearcat family:
- Angela Hale, our new District Executive Administrative Assistant and Human Resources Specialist, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for supporting staff and students alike.
- Jessica Covert joins us as our Chief Business Official, and we look forward to her leadership in managing our district's resources effectively.
- New to our Bearcats teaching staff are Tyler Anawalt and Desiree Wiles, both of whom are eager to inspire and engage our students in the classroom.
- Alicia Brandau joins our Bearcats kitchen staff, ready to nourish our youngest students with healthy meals.
- And we are pleased to have Austin Caldera join us as a new Custodian, committed to maintaining a clean and safe learning environment for all.
- Finally, Kenny Fioravanti, a long-time veteran member of our school community, has stepped into the role of Maintenance Operations and Transportation Supervisor, where his dedication and expertise will ensure our facilities remain safe and welcoming.
Our committed leadership team continues with Megan Grijalva, Union Hill’s proud Principal, whose dedication to educational excellence is unwavering; Erika Clawson, Director of Special Education and Student Services, who ensures all students receive the support they need; Kevin Selby, Dean of Students, fostering a positive school culture; and Mary Kragel, Early Childhood Education Director, supporting our youngest learners, after-care students, and the staff that serve them with her considerable experience and skill.
As we embark on this new school year, let us all embrace the opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed together. I am confident that, with our incredible teaching staff, supportive families, and engaged community partners, Union Hill will continue to live up to the tradition of excellence that has defined our school for the past 156 years since 1868!
Here’s to a wonderful, exciting, and successful 2024-2025 school year!
Sincerely,
Scott Mikal-Heine
